Gotra—Do you know yours?
I was having a discussion with my brother recently over all this gotra fuss, and suddenly he made a comment that “What if Manu and Smriti were from different gotra? “.
Now a day’s it’s the hottest topic for discussion, even the priests confirm your caste before you enter the temple premises, and you need to be of some particular caste to become a more genuine devotee. Isn't that strange! At least to me it is.
Where does all this come from? Honor killing, gotra etc. what it’s all about? The cases varying like where a pregnant daughter was killed by her mother because she married someone from other caste, a lady was forced to accept his husband as his brother because they were from same caste. These are just two well known cases and I need not mention what all is happening around. There have been nineteen cases of honour killing between April 9 and June 30. That’s translates to 80 days. Roughly, one murder every four days! And these cases are just reported by media, you never know how many cases are still under the dark.
We say that Britisher’s divided us and ruled on the famous policy of “Divide and Rule”, but it’s not true. We were always divided whether it was caste, hierarchy or some other factor. They just took advantage of our pre defined mindset. It has been from early medieval India and has made its evil roots so deep that we still follow this division. Upper caste i.e. Brahmins were always the privileged and were allowed to marry in any caste they wish to while this was not allowed for others. And today also this caste funda is only for poor or unprivileged ones while the people from privileged class do these marriages on the name of upliftment whether they really mean the same or not. Nobody cares about caste, differences, background etc if you are successful. In fact in my country, the poor are condemned and banished for inter caste relation, while the high and mighty are praised for the same under the name of society development.
We people are bunch of hypocrites and are well defined by a fixed mindset. We don’t want to change even if it results in something better for us. We have a general attitude that “who cares”. We can speak about all these social evils but won’t raise our voice. 90 percent of us have this attitude while the other 10 percent are involved in this.
Solution to this kind of problem will only come when we will be stricter towards this panchayat or khap thing. We need to change the way they take law for granted. There are no excuses; there is no justification for all this. The criminals should be hanged that only can set an example. Finally no escape for wrong doing!
